    In Greek legend, a princess Arne was bribed with gold by King Minos of Crete, and was punished for her avarice by being transformed into an equally avaricious jackdaw, who still seeks shiny things.

    Also know as the Western Jackdaw or European Jackdaw, it is the second smallest member of the genus.

    The species has a social hierarchy. Young males gain their status prior to pairing with a female, where unmated females are low making them last to have access to shelter and food. Pair-bonded/mated birds share status, the female becoming equal to their mate.

    It is gregarious, vocal, and are a intelligent bird; seen sometimes using "tools."

    The European jackdaw can be trained to imitate human speech.

    They are omnivorous and eat a variety from plants to invertebrates to food waste.

    Adults have silver or grey irises, while juveniles are light blue.

    The species is a monogamous one as well as being a 'resident' type.

    Like magpies, they have an affinity for shiny things such as jewelry.

    They are skilled flyers that can maneuver tightly, tumble, glide, with characteristic jerky wing beats.
